Why We at ChessAPit See These Puzzles as Works of Art

At ChessAPit, we present unique chess puzzles. The first collection we have on display is by the artist ‘Shlomi Yerushalmi ‘ whose works have made a special impression on us, and not only us: many have described these positionsas as works of genius. While two-player chess problems are a familiar concept in the chess world, we believe that the puzzles presented here stand out as something else – something worthy of being called works of art.
Here’s why:

  1. Every detail has meaning
In these puzzles, no chess piece is placed at random. Every single piece serves an intentional purpose—often more than one. As in fine art, where every element on the canvas matters, the joy comes from discovering how each detail fits into the whole.
  2. A single, pure solution
Each puzzle has exactly one correct solution—no unintended alternatives. Some moves may appear promising, only for the solver to find that Black has a hidden defense. These “almost solutions” add drama and depth, making the real solution feel even more elegant when uncovered.
  3. Depth and challenge
The intended solutions often involve surprising, original moves or themes rarely seen in practical games. Hidden psychological traps make the true mate elusive, challenging even seasoned players.
  4. The art of ‘less is more’
Two moves may seem like a small canvas, but here lies the genius—condensing depth, creativity, and beauty into such a concise form. The satisfaction of uncovering a mate that was hidden “in plain sight” is part of the artistry.
  5. A proven source of enjoyment
Over the years, these puzzles have delighted and challenged a wide range of people—from seasoned masters to casual players, adults and children alike. They offer something for everyone who enjoys the beauty of chess.
  6. Crafted with care
Each puzzle is the result of careful thought, patient refinement, and a deep love for chess composition. Every position has been shaped with precision until it reached its final form.

An invitation to explore
For us at ChessAPit, these are not just chess problems — they are miniature works of art meant to be explored and appreciated. We invite you to browse the collection, test your skills, and see for yourself why we believe they deserve a place in the gallery of chess artistry.
